SANA’A – A group of fishermen from southern Yemen found a rare treasure inside the carcass of a sperm whale. Inside the animal they found 127 kilograms of ambergris, the “vomit” of whales, which is used in perfumery. According to Independent UK, the find is valued at around £1.1 million, which is roughly R$7 million.

The 35 workers were warned of the animal’s corpse floating in the Gulf of Aden, and they dragged it with a small boat ashore and opened the corpse.

One fisherman told the BBC: “As soon as we got close to it, there was a strong smell and we felt like this whale had something on it.”

The unidentified Yemeni added, “We decided to catch the whale, take it ashore and cut it down to see what was inside, and yes it was amber. It didn’t smell good – but a lot of money.”

Amber — known as “vomit gold” or “floating gold” — forms inside the intestines of sperm whales over many years to produce a gray or black waxy substance. It is used in perfumes to preserve fragrances.

Fishermen in the village of Al Kheesa agreed to share the profits on a piece of gray amber before selling it for the equivalent of 7 million Brazilian reais, according to Middle East Eye.

One of the fishermen told the site that they have gone to buy houses, while some are planning to get married now that they are out of poverty.
