Zelensky may visit US Congressman Biden on Wednesday, sources said

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may travel to Washington to visit the US Congress on Wednesday to meet with US President Joe Biden, sources familiar with the situation said, in what would be the first known trip from Zelensky abroad since the Russian invasion in late February.

Zelensky is expected to visit the US capital on Wednesday, a source familiar with the planning of the visit said. The trip is not confirmed and security concerns may force a change in plans, the source said.

Punchbowl News first reported on the possible visit, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Biden is expected to meet with Zelensky at the White House on Wednesday, a source said.

A spokesman for Zelensky did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The office of Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Zelensky’s possible visit.

The Ukrainian leader made a surprise visit to troops in the devastated city of Baghmut on the eastern front on Tuesday, his office said, highlighting Russia’s faltering but persistent efforts to capture him.

In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin has presented medals inside the Kremlin’s facility to the Russian-appointed leaders of Ukraine’s four regions, which Moscow says it annexed after its neighbor invaded.

In his video address Tuesday night, Zelenskiy referred to his trip in September to the “Bakhmut Fortress” in Donetsk, one of the provinces claimed by Russia, but which most countries dismiss as an illegal occupation.

He said he passed through several cities in the Donetsk region, including Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka.
