Speaking during the Goldman Sachs event, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that Call of Duty likely becoming an Xbox exclusive would create a “tremendous opportunity” for Battlefield.

“In a world where there can be doubts about the future of Call of Duty and what platforms may and may not be, given it’s completely platform-neutral and cross-platform with Battlefield, I think it’s a huge opportunity,” the executive said.

Doubts about the future of the Call of Duty franchise on PlayStation have been Sony’s main argument for trying to stop Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard. The company argued to organizers that Call of Duty is a unique game that is hard to replace and has the potential to make Sony and PlayStation less competitive in the future.

Microsoft has confirmed that it intends to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation “for many more years” After the expiration of the current contract between Sony and Activision, which already guarantees three games on PlayStation. Microsoft’s deal to acquire Activision Blizzard is under scrutiny by regulators in several regions of the world, including Brazil. For now, only Saudi Arabia has given the green light to complete the deal.

Earlier this month, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said its investigation into the merger could be expanded due to existing concerns, mainly related to the presence of Call of Duty on PlayStation and Sony’s ability to compete.

Meanwhile, EA is still determined to get back on track for the Battlefield series, which is in the doldrums after the commercial failure of two recent releases. The series’ plans include a new game whose campaign will be developed by Ridgeline Games, led by Halo co-founder Marcus Lehto.
