The premiere of “Wonka,” a prequel to the classic “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” starring Timothée Chalamet, exceeded expectations with US$39 million in the US and Canada. But the performance on the international stage was even more promising, with US$53.6 million in 77 markets, beating musicals such as “Paddington” (2014) and “The Greatest Showman” (2017) and “Mary Returns Poppins” (2017). 2018). With an early release in some countries (including Brazil) last week, the film’s total gross is already US$151.4 million.
The opening is a boost to a music genre that has struggled in recent times. Produced by Warner Bros. And directed by Paul King, known for “Paddington,” “Wonka” is the origin story of magical candy Willy Wonka, who previously starred Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp in 1971’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and the 2005 remake.
The public loved it, giving “Wonka” an A-rating on CinemaScore, a survey conducted with audiences as they left theaters, and a critics score of 84% on the website Rotten Tomatoes.
Buoyed by “Wonka’s” performance, Warner will risk the film’s success with the release of DC superhero film “Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom” next weekend, competing for ticket sales.
