A meeting on this topic will be held at the University of Rio de Janeiro
The entire program will be broadcast on MCTI's YouTube channel
Brasilia (only) – Women make up the majority on university and science entry scholarships, but only account for 35% of production scholarships. This is one of the topics that will be discussed today (15) and tomorrow (16) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), broadcast on the MCTI YouTube channel (youtube.com/MCTI).
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, highlighted this reality during the launch of the “Transversal Agenda Report – Women”.
MCTI will hold a thematic conference titled “More Girls and Women in Science: Towards an Equity and Intersectionality Agenda.”
The meeting will discuss issues such as the impact of gender and racial stereotypes on scientific careers, harassment and the underrepresentation of women in areas of power. The event will hold working groups on topics affecting girls and women in science.
Democratic space
The two dialogue spaces to be held at UERJ are part of the calendar of the 5th National Science, Technology and Innovation Congress, the most important and democratic event aimed at discussing public policies in the sector.
The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), will be held from June 4 to 6 in Brasilia (DF), and its theme will be “Science, Technology and Innovation for a Just and Sustainable World.” And developed Brazil.”
5CNCTI is of a consultative nature and is being reorganized after a hiatus of 14 years. Its aim is to discuss the needs of society in the field of science and technology and to propose recommendations for the development of a new national strategy for science, technology and innovation (ENCTI) that should be followed over the next few years (2024-2030). .
The new strategy will replace the 2016-2023 strategy, whose programmes, plans and results will also be analyzed during the event.
Advancement of women
As explained by ITU College of Public Communications and Scientific Publishing Coordinator, Reggiani Ribeiro, who is part of the event's mobilization committee, participants will prepare guidelines to promote gender equality and increase the participation and leadership of girls and women in science.
For example, two of the discussions will be about “the impact of gender and racial stereotypes on the careers of scientists” and “the underrepresentation of women in spheres of power.”
“Only through a broad and diverse discussion can we think about the most effective ways not only to increase the number of women in science, but also of researchers and scientists with real conditions to study and work. Because we know that the issue of concentration of productive grants is just one of the challenges that women face in this context.” “The conference will expand this discussion to include other key areas.”
Productive Grants (PQ) from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) are awarded to outstanding researchers in their fields of knowledge. Of the 16,108 scholarship holders in this way in the country, only 5,642 are women (35.6%) and the remaining 10,208 (66.4%) are men, based on data registered up to July 2023, collected by Parent in Science from the CNPq base through Fala.br platform.
