Watch the best moments from Klopp’s farewell match against Liverpool
Arne Slott, 45, was a professional footballer, but with little success. As a midfielder, he only played for Dutch clubs between 1995 and 2013. He played 214 matches and scored 28 goals in total.
In his homeland, while playing for Sparta Rotterdam in the 2008/2009 season, he played alongside goalkeeper Cassio, Former Corinthians and near Cruzeiro. Liverpool’s new coach also faced defender Virgil van Dijk, the current Reds coach.
After retiring from playing, Slott began his career on the sidelines of the Zwolle youth team in 2013. After a few years as an assistant, the Dutchman took over the first team as coach of the final: AZ AZ Alkmaar, in 2019.
The first season looked promising. Slott finished second in the 2019/2020 Dutch Championship table, but the tournament ended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the return of football in 2021, Arne Slott took over as coach of Feyenoord and won two national titles, before joining Liverpool.
For fans less interested in Europe’s smaller leagues, the name that will replace Klopp may seem random, but it is not. Through what looked like an examination committee, Liverpool put several names of potential managers on the table, and Arne Slott’s candidates beat out the candidates with the most ostentatious CVs.
Coaches Liverpool is evaluating for Klopp’s place:
- Arnie slot
- Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen)
- Ruben Amorim (Sporting)
- Roberto De Zerbe (formerly Brighton)
- Julian Nagelsmann (Germany)
- Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth)
- Eddie Howe (Newcastle)
- Sebastian Hoeneß (Stuttgart)
- Michelle (Girona)
- Simone Inzaghi (Inter Milan)
- Paulo Fonseca (Lille)
The main idea was not to lose the level of attacking, dynamic and exhilarating play achieved with KloppAccording to what was reported by “The Athletic”. This was one of Slott’s strongest points.
If the ball is at his feet, Arne Sloat does not score many goals, with the clipboard in his hand, it is different for the Dutchman. The coach is considered a fan of Pep Guardiola and does not hide his passion and admiration for the attacking style of play with a lot of possession and pressure after the loss of the ball played by the Spanish teams.
In an interview with the official portal of the Premier League, striker Brian Linsen described a little about Arne Slott’s playing style. The Dutch player trained under Liverpool’s new coach during his time at Feyenoord.
– I remember he was showing stuff from Napoli too, but it was mainly clips of Guardiola, how they played and pressed. […] I remember a specific clip of Raheem Sterling in the Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea [em 2021]. You see him running 70 meters back to make a defensive move to prevent a goal.
The former Feyenoord player analyzed: “Klopp created a masterpiece at Liverpool by raising the level, but I think Arne can also play beautiful football there, because he knows how his team can entertain the fans.”
Sports success also influenced the choice. Despite his short career of almost five years as a professional coach, Arne Sloat won the Dutch Championship and the Dutch Cup in the 2022/2023 season.
Even without the attacking power of top domestic rivals, such as Ajax and Eindhoven, Slott’s team dominated the domestic scene that season.
In addition to the silverware, a year ago, Slott led Feyenoord to the Conference League final. The Dutch club lost 1-0 to Jose Mourinho’s Roma and finished in second place.
In this farewell season with Feyenoord, Arne Slott led the club to second place in the Eredivisie and secured a place in the next edition of the Champions League. In total, the coach leaves his position after 149 matches, in which he achieved 97 wins, 29 draws, and 23 defeats.
