What is this and how does it work?

Quantum computing, a high technology that can make huge changes and facilitate future problem solving, is a field that brings together a wide range of information covering computer science.

What is quantum computing?

Quantum computing seeks to create machines capable enough to perform complex computations more efficiently than conventional computers.

Computing is currently based on “bits,” a system that can only assume one piece of information: false or true (0’s and 1’s). This process occurs through the passage of electric current through semiconductor mechanisms.

On the other hand, quantum computers use quantum bits as a base, or as they are also known: qubits, and thus perform the computational processing.

Quantum computing: how it works

In quantum computing, a phenomenon called superposition occurs, which is when a qubit can exist in several states simultaneously, making the computer able to perform many computations at the same time.

Another fundamental process that occurs is entanglement, where two qubits are linked. Thus, the state of one qubit is dependent on the other, making calculations that are largely impossible to perform by conventional computers, solveable using quantum technology.

Advantages of quantum computing

In this technique, qubits have an advantage over conventional bits, because they are not limited to states 0 and 1. Qubits can support many states at the same time, becoming more capable in their processing.

This can facilitate and generate optimal solutions to complex problems, helping to carry out work that currently seems impossible to do.

The innovation also enables the device to perform operations with large data sets, making quantum computing ideal for analyzing complex systems. Another advantage is the ability to perform parallel calculations, which significantly increases the speed of information processing.

Other benefits are: a large capacity for storing information, ensuring greater security for communications and the possibility of using quantum computing in several areas, such as finance, medicine and logistics.
