Volkswagen built 10 units of the ID. Buzz electric combi for use in experiments. Initially, the vehicles will only be in circulation in Austin, Texas.

But the company’s idea is to expand the use of these cars to four other cities in the US over the next 10 years. “The expansion of the Volkswagen Group’s global autonomous vehicle program to the US is an important milestone for us. In the future, we will meet the growing demand for new mobility services,” said Pablo de C, CEO of Volkswagen America.

How will the tests be conducted?

  • In Austin, Volkswagen’s program ID.Buzz will use a test fleet to collect mileage data in various driving scenarios.
  • An autonomous driving suite consists of cameras, radars and sensors.
  • A fleet of electric Kombis will be used to transport passengers to companies and even some politicians.
  • In the initial testing phase, all cars will have a driver.
  • The driver will act only in case of emergency so as not to interfere with the tests.

Volkswagen: Change in plans

  • The start of the trial comes months after Volkswagen, along with Ford, withdrew funding from autonomous startup Argo AI, which had planned to launch robotaxi services in the US and Europe.
  • A financial loss caused Argo to close.
  • VW originally planned to use Argo’s technology to power the autonomous ID.Buzz fleet.
  • Along with the crashes, the company partnered with Mobileye to develop hardware and software in-house.
