With a broken nose after taking a punch from Gerson last Tuesday, Varela appeared in a mask in the warm-up at the Maracanã before the ball rolled into the Flamingo x Grêmio, for the second match of the Copa do Brasil semi-final. But the Uruguayan right-back, who was confirmed for Wednesday’s game, withdrew his protection from playing.

Upon re-presentation, Varela arrived at the CT scan better than expected, with no obvious swelling and only a slight purple under eye. Gerson, who injured his hand after a punch to the side, is also fit.
Flamingo Go to the field with: Matheus Cunha, Varela, Fabricio Bruno, Leo Pereira and Felipe Luis; Polgar, Gerson, and Victor Hugo; Arascaita, Gabigol, and Bruno Henrique.
Wednesday morning training was the team’s last practice against Grêmio. This was the first post-fight activity between Gerson and Varela, and the atmosphere was described as “calm and light” as the episode ended. There was no friction between the two parties.
Flamingo and Grêmio face off at 21:30 (Brasilia time), in Maracanã, for a place in the Copa do Brasil final. Rubro Negro has a 2-0 advantage and could lose by goal difference to qualify.
“Grêmio breathes when he watches Flamengo crunch,” says Andre Rizk
