USP is one of the 150 best universities in the world according to a Academic Ranking of World Universities 2022 (ARWU), released August 15 by Chinese consulting firm Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. The rating evaluated more than 2,500 institutions and ranked the top thousand institutions.
Harvard University took first place for the 20th year in a row, followed by Stanford University. With the exception of the English universities of Cambridge (4th place) and Oxford (7th place), all other institutions in the top ten are from North America.
Among the Brazilian companies, in addition to the USP, are the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), in the 301-400 group, and Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp), in the 401-500 group, linked to the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). In all, 21 Brazilian universities appear on the list.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been published since 2003, and is considered one of the leaders in university rankings. The ranking uses six indicators to rate institutions, including the number of alumni and faculty with Nobel Prize winners, the number of researchers most cited, the number of articles published in impact journals, the number of articles indexed in the Scientific Citation Index – Expanded and in the Community Index of scholarly citations and research performance for every per capita in relation to the size of the institution.
