This is the first time in American history that the Speaker of the House has been ousted. In 1910, the House of Representatives attempted to remove the Speaker from office, but the number of votes was insufficient.
In the coming days, delegates will elect a new president from among candidates nominated by the parties.
Republican Patrick McHenry will serve as interim until that happens. The deputy was chosen from a list of potential successors McCarthy presented when he was elected in January.
“Before selecting a speaker, it would be prudent to first take a break for the respective conferences and congresses to meet and discuss the way forward,” McHenry said at the end of Tuesday’s session.
In the present scenario, it is not known who has a chance for the post of Chairman of the Assembly. Republicans hold a slim 221 to 212 majority in the House, but that doesn’t mean the party’s representatives share the same view.
In January, McCarthy had to go through 15 rounds of voting to secure the support of his more conservative colleagues — a feat he achieved only after making a series of concessions. On Tuesday, eight Republican representatives voted to expel the speaker of the House, a critical step toward removing McCarthy.
He told the press that if he wanted to, a Republican could run for House presidency again, but that was not in his plans.
