The American Progressive Congress withdrew its letter to the White House calling for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine conflict.
Sputnik – The document, signed by 30 Democratic members of Congress and delivered to the White House yesterday (24), has angered a section of the party divide and helped push for the document’s withdrawal.
On Tuesday, the American Progressive Congress withdrew a letter it sent to the White House calling for a negotiated solution to the conflict in Ukraine, according to Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the group’s leader.
“Congressional Progressive Caucus Retracts Recent Letter to White House Regarding Ukraine […] The letter was written several months ago but unfortunately it was published by the group without verification,” Jayapal said, as quoted by Reuters.
Yesterday (24), 30 Democratic members of Congress wrote to President Joe Biden, urging him to change his strategy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict and demand a negotiated agreement with Washington’s current military and economic support for Kiev.
Some other Democrats were shocked just two weeks before the Nov. 8 midterm elections that will determine which political party controls Congress.
The reaction was immediate, including from the White House, on Monday (25) by Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who said “we are very clear: there is nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” and “this is the president’s decision. [Vladimir] “Zelensky should take the time for any kind of dialogue, any kind of negotiation with Russia,” it said.
Democratic factions argued that the letter undermined their party’s position by showing unwavering support for Ukraine — a move Republicans are fighting over whether to give Kiev more aid from Washington.
On the Republican side, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the House’s top representative and next speaker, said in an interview this month that Ukraine would not be a “blank test” if Republicans took over.
