Major US airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines, issued statements on Friday (19) morning.
“We are aware of a technical issue with a supplier affecting multiple carriers. American is working with the supplier to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” American Airlines said on X (formerly Twitter). )
Frontier said a “major Microsoft technical outage” temporarily affected its operations, while SunCountry said a third-party vendor affected its reservation and check-in facilities.
On the X, passengers posted videos reporting problems in the past few hours. “Stuck on the runway at LAX [Aeroporto Internacional de Los Angeles] “Because with all the airlines worldwide IT system outages and a bunch of other things, boarding passes can’t be filled,” wrote one.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the department is monitoring flight cancellations and delay issues and will hold companies accountable. “For its obligations to meet the needs of passengers.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
Microsoft has reported a system failure on its Azure computing platform that has affected many parts of the world, mainly in the United States.
Separately, the company said it is investigating an issue affecting several Microsoft 365 apps and services.
