US accuses Iran of hacking attack on Trump and Kamala – 08/19/2024 – Al-Alam

The US government said on Monday (19) that Iran was behind cyber attacks carried out in recent weeks against the election campaigns of Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, who will face each other at the ballot box in November in the race for the White House.

“We have detected increased hostile activity by Iran during this election period,” said a joint statement from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security agency responsible for protecting the U.S. government from cyberattacks.

The agencies say these operations aim to influence elections and intensify political polarization in the United States between supporters of the Democratic and Republican parties.

The memo named Iran as responsible for the attack on a Trump campaign site that was announced on the 12th of this month. The former president’s team had already said that Tehran was behind the attack, but no information that was not already public had been obtained.

The FBI also said that the Persian state tried to reach Kamala Harris’ campaign, but the attempt was not successful.

Iran has denied carrying out the attacks. The country’s mission to the United Nations (Tehran and Washington have not had direct diplomatic relations since 1980, after the Iranian revolution) said the US accusations were “baseless and have no basis in reality.” It added that “the Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention or motive to interfere in the US presidential election.”

US intelligence agencies allege that Tehran seeks to “sow discord and undermine confidence in our democratic institutions,” and that the country “has a long-standing interest in exploiting social tensions” in the United States.
