According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), around 350,000 Brazilian travelers enter the UK each year. Until recently, travelers only needed a passport for up to 180 days, but last year, the British government began requiring an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
This document is a travel authorization through which the government of the political group can digitize the borders at the airports and have accurate information about the number of people entering and leaving their countries and their origin.
The British government said the move allows for deterrence of threats and provides additional safeguards for individuals and carriers. The initiative will be fully implemented by the end of this year.
Authorization is mandatory for all foreign nationals wishing to enter the United Kingdom without a visa for a maximum stay of six months, except for British and Irish nationals.
With an ETA, you can travel to the UK for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term courses such as language courses of less than 90 days. Those who intend to stay longer should apply for a visa instead of a document.
How to request an ETA?
Travelers wishing to apply for an ETA should access the official British government website or app and do not need to visit embassies or visa offices. The process takes a few minutes.
Possession of a valid biometric passport issued by Brazil is one of the requirements for application. You must also provide an electronic payment method such as credit or debit cards to pay the ten pounds sterling fee online.
Applicant must share personal and contact information such as home address and employment details. After completing the form, a confirmation will be sent to the registered email address and the system will check if the applicant is eligible as per UK Security Data Verification.
Feedback on the result may take up to 72 hours. If the request is rejected, the applicant can fill the new form and pay the fee again. However, it is advised that this should be done only when the reason for rejection is established and resolved. If you are still denied, you should apply for a permanent visitor, transit or creative worker visa.
According to information on the UK government website, the ETA lasts for two years and allows the traveler to visit the Union countries as many times as they want during this period. However, if he gets a new passport, he needs to get a new ETA.
Anyone needing a visa should be aware of the requirements
According to a survey conducted by the Brazilian Association of Exchange Agencies (BELDA), the United Kingdom is the second most desirable country for Brazilians to study or work. For those planning to live in the country legally, obtaining a visa is essential.
You need to know the requirements to be fulfilled to request the document. Among them, the country has a source of minimum income to support itself. By March 2025, this amount must reach £38,700 a year under new UK immigration rules.
A request can be made through the British Government website by submitting the passport and paying the fee set by the embassy. For student visas, proof of enrollment is required. Proof of contract is required for work visas.
Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in the English language, and for this purpose, they should consider major English courses aimed at obtaining the IELTs certificate, an official exam administered by the British Council that guarantees language proficiency certification.
