Twitter has declared Friday (22) Earth Day, which will not allow ads that deny the reality of climate change.

The announcement comes at a time when the social network is trying to fend off an unwanted purchase by billionaire Elon Musk, who believes that users should be able to express what they want on the platform.

“Misleading ads on Twitter that conflict with the scientific consensus on climate change are prohibited, in line with our policy on inappropriate content,” Casey Junod, the company’s CEO of global sustainability, said via his official blog.

“We believe that climate change denial on Twitter should not be monetised, and such dishonest propaganda should not detract from important discussions about the climate crisis,” he added.

Last year, Twitter introduced a topic feature that helps users find conversations about climate change and implement “trusted and trusted” information centers in a hot topic list, including the science behind climate change.

“We recognize that misleading climate information can undermine efforts to protect the planet,” Junod said. “Now more than ever, meaningful climate action on the part of all of us is critical.”

Despite the temptation to access Musk’s fortune, Twitter does not want to be under the supervision of a mogul, who is known to get straight to the point without thinking about the consequences too much.

The platform has taken steps to prevent Musk from controlling all of Twitter’s shares, as concerns about the direction it could give the company’s management outweigh the bonus offered.

In early April, Musk made an unsolicited $43 billion bid to buy the social network, claiming he wanted to give users greater freedom of speech.

Musk is defending that the content is not moderated, a sensitive issue especially in the profiles of famous figures such as former US President Donald Trump, who was banned from the podium after the attack on the Capitol by his supporters, who rejected the results of the presidential election. 2020 elections

But Musk’s campaign has also raised concerns among technology and free speech experts. They point to Musk’s unexpected statements and criticism history, which go against his stated goals.
