“Can you promise us that you will give us more capacity to import the world’s best and brightest into America?”
“I promise,” Trump said. “But I agree, otherwise I wouldn’t swear… You graduate from college and I think as part of your degree, you automatically get a green card so you can stay in this country, and that includes community colleges. .” A green card allows individuals to live and work permanently in the United States and is a pathway to citizenship.
It was unclear whether Trump was referring to all foreign nationals, including those who entered the US illegally or overstayed their visas, or just student visa holders.
When asked for comment, the Trump campaign said in a statement that only after “the most aggressive vetting process in American history” would “highly talented graduates who can make a significant contribution to America” be admitted.
One of the defenders of immigration in America is not convinced by Trump’s proposal.
“I almost laugh because his administration has adopted so many policies aimed at restricting student visas and making it harder for people to stay in the country after graduation,” said Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director of the American Immigration Council.
