Donald Trump said Sunday (22) that he will not run for the White House again if he loses to Kamala Harris in this year’s election. The statement by the 78-year-old former President of the United States was made to host Sheryl Atkinson on the Full Measure program.
Asked if he would run for re-election in 2028 if he lost to Kamala, Trump said: “No, I don’t think so. I think … it will be the same.”
“I don’t see it,” he said of launching another run for the Republican presidential nomination, saying he hopes to win this year’s elections, scheduled for Nov. 5.
After Joe Biden abandoned his re-election bid, Trump is the oldest presidential candidate in US history and will be 82 in the 2028 election.
Biden, 81, was pressured by Democrats to drop out of the race after his disastrous performance in a debate with Trump in June this year. The President backed 59-year-old Kamala to succeed him as the party’s candidate.
Despite a narrow advantage of 48.4% to 45.5%, the vice president is ahead of Trump in polls, according to an average indicated by the website FiveThirteen.
This Saturday (21), Kamala accepted an invitation to a new debate on CNN against Trump on October 23, 15 days before the US election. However, the Republican said it was too late to re-debate his opponent.
In a statement, Kamala’s campaign manager, Jen O’Malley Dillon, said the Democratic nominee is “ready for another opportunity to share the stage with Donald Trump” and “should have no problem accepting this debate.”
Trump, who attended a campaign event in North Carolina this Saturday afternoon, said he had already participated in two debates and that the first one against Joe Biden on CNN was “very fair” — at the time, the format determined that two moderators would not fact-check what the candidates said.
“They are [a CNN] They were heavily criticized by fanatics on the far left for being too fair. In other words, they will never be fair again,” Trump said at the event.
Kamala retaliated this Sunday. At a campaign fundraiser in New York City, Trump said the candidates should accept the debate plan because they “owe it to the American people and voters.”
“We have to discuss again,” the candidate said. “My opponent presents a reason to avoid [outro debate]”.
