Brazil: “The international community cannot stand still”

In a speech during the meeting, Brazilian Ambassador Tovar da Silva Nunes highlighted how the data presented reveal “a humanitarian catastrophe and the imminent collapse of the health system in Gaza.”

“We are deeply concerned about the loss of more than 17,000 lives and the disproportionate effects of the conflict on women and children,” he said. According to him, Brazil also regrets the more than 200 attacks on healthcare facilities and teams and the impact of the fighting on the operations of hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

If nothing is done, untreated people will die in the coming days due to lack of access to basic health services and supplies.

In the Brazilian Government’s estimation, the recent resumption of hostilities has exacerbated an already unsustainable situation. He added: “Urgent action is needed to change the situation on the ground.”

In his appeal, the Ambassador called on all parties to the conflict to “ensure the protection of the civilian population and enable them to have timely, unimpeded, sustainable and predictable access to medical assistance and health supplies, as well as humanitarian assistance.”
