Democratic and Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate said Wednesday they could vote on a bill that would keep the government funded and avoid a partial shutdown.
“No drama, no delay, no government shutdown. That’s our goal, and we hope to get a deal done soon,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said on the Senate floor.
Leaders of both parties said they support the interim spending bill that passed Tuesday by a wide bipartisan margin in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
Current funding expires at midnight local time on Friday, and both houses of Congress must pass the spending bill and send it to Democratic President Joe Biden for signature to avoid impasse.
Republican Senate. John Thune said a vote could be taken on the bill.
“Right now we don’t see anything that can’t be done quickly,” he said.
