The United Kingdom has a partnership agreement with the City of Salvador

This Thursday (10th), the British government is launching two partnerships in the education sector with the city of Salvador: a collaboration agreement between the UK embassy-led Skills for Prosperity and the city’s education sector. The British Council seeks to implement activities for the continuing professional development of teachers, teacher educators and other education professionals.

The Skills for Prosperity Program promotes access to education and skill development opportunities for youth and disadvantaged groups. These are efforts to democratize English learning that have already benefited more than 2.2 million students and more than 20,000 teachers through a variety of teaching materials and an English language training platform. In Salvador, 100,000 elementary school students and more than 9,000 public school teachers are expected to benefit from the program.

“Promoting the growth of education is a priority for the UK. We know that learning English is essential for young people to have a successful career. Therefore, we want to contribute to those with limited resources to have this opportunity and teachers to be prepared for this task. “Partnerships like these symbolize one of the core tasks of diplomacy: bringing countries together to promote social justice and equal opportunities,” said Melanie Hoggins, Acting Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

The agreement, led by the British Council, marks the start of a joint venture with Salvador City Hall to develop the skills of English language teachers, improve their fluency and specific skills for teaching the language. Educators from other areas can also benefit from this initiative as it includes continuing education for science teachers and their technologies. The partnership provides for the implementation of bilingual schools in all administrative areas of the city.

It is a UK Government funded scheme benefiting nine countries: Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

In Brazil, the program focuses on democratizing access to quality English teaching, as mastery of the language is a critical skill for economic development and the country’s greater integration into the global economy. A consortium of Brazilian foundations and NGOs implements the project, led by the Lemon Foundation. Associação Nova Escola, Instituto Reúna and the British Council are part of the consortium, fulfilling various attributes for the success of this initiative.
