Sputnik Brazil – British Foreign Secretary David Cameron expressed concern on Tuesday that Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip would violate international humanitarian law.
During a session of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the UK Parliament, Cameron said: “If you're asking me whether I'm concerned that Israel has taken steps that violate international law, such as bombing this particular place or something like that – yes, of course I'm concerned about that.” According to legal guidance provided by Britain's top diplomat, foreign lawyers, Israel follows international law, although there is a “question mark” in many cases.
On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian movement Hamas launched a massive rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip, while its fighters crossed the border and opened fire on soldiers and civilians. As a result, more than 1,200 people were killed and about 240 kidnapped in Israel. Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a total blockade of Gaza, and conducted ground incursions into Palestinian territory with the goal of eliminating Hamas militants and rescuing hostages. Local officials say more than 23,000 people have been killed in Gaza so far as a result of Israeli attacks.
On November 24, Qatar brokered an agreement between Israel and Hamas for a temporary ceasefire, the exchange of some prisoners and hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire was extended several times and expired on December 1.
