247 Today, Saturday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was surprised by the escalation of the Israeli bombing of Gaza, reiterating the call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to deliver aid.
“I have been encouraged in recent days by what appears to be a growing consensus within the international community on the need for at least a humanitarian truce in the conflict,” he said in a statement.
He added: “Unfortunately, instead of this stance, I was surprised by an unprecedented escalation of bombing and its devastating effects, which undermines the humanitarian goals mentioned above.”
According to the Portuguese network CNN, this was the first reaction of the United Nations Secretary-General to the night of intense bombing and the expansion of the Israeli army’s operations in the Gaza Strip on Friday.
The Palestinian Hamas movement attacked Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, in addition to 220 kidnapped people. Israel responded with bombings and ground incursions into the Gaza Strip, which has been controlled by Hamas since 2007.
