A new draw is available for a group of Brazilian contract workers, Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço (FGTS). The entitlement is a right guaranteed by law, but it can only be revoked in specific cases and it is not always possible to recover the total balance.
Every month, employers deposit 8% of the employee’s salary into an account in Caixa, this amount has income and accumulates so that the worker can withdraw it in the event of dismissal without good reason, retirement, serious illness of the worker or dependent, and the purchase of the house itself.
Another option that allows to recover part of the balance of active and inactive FGTS accounts is to withdraw the date of birth, which is available to some people at the beginning of the year. In order to withdraw, it is necessary to comply with the requirements, choose the method, and give up the termination of the withdrawal.
New draw for workers born in January
The Birthday Draw allows you to withdraw a portion of your FGTS balance annually in the month of the worker’s birthday. The method is optional and when chosen, in case of dismissal, the worker does not receive the full amount of the guarantee fund, and will receive only 40% payment, referring to the termination penalty.
Funds are available from the first working day of the employee’s birth month and can be withdrawn after two months. In this way, the deadline for November-borns ends on January 31st, December-borns can opt-out until February and about 1.3 million January-borns can opt-out until March.
The amount each person will receive depends on the balance accumulated in active and inactive FGTS accounts, Christmas withdrawal issues from 5% to 50% plus an additional premium for balances over R$500.

How do you join the method?
This method is optional, so those who wish to join the Christmas draw must apply to Caixa. The application can be made through the FGTS application available for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.gov.caixa.fgts.trabalhador&hl=pt_BR&gl=US) and iOS (https://apps.apple.com/br/app/fgts/id1038441027).
Through the application, it is also possible to check the balance of active and inactive accounts, request withdrawals in the ways prescribed by law, indicate an account (from any bank) for the amounts to be deposited, send the necessary documents and follow all stages of the process.
In order to be entitled to withdraw in the same year of the application, the adhesion must be made until the last day of the month of birth of the worker. After this period, the amount can only be withdrawn next year. If you want to go back to the standard withdrawal termination method, you will have to wait two years to withdraw the full amount in case of dismissal without just cause.
