Although the City Council announced meningitis C vaccination for all residents of Belo Horizonte until Friday (28), many people who were in health centers this Thursday (27) are no longer able to get vaccinated. Of the 152 health centers in the capital of Minas Gerais, at noon on Thursday, only one has been vaccinated: the Sio Azul health center in the Venda Nova region.

According to the Belo Horizonte City Council, the lack of vaccinations in the municipality is due to high demand. Also according to the municipal executive, more than 200,000 doses of vaccine have already been administered since the target audience was expanded on March 28. Something temporary, according to the Secretary of State for Health’s guidance. Starting next week, the doses will only be applied again to children between 3 and 5 months of age, with booster doses at 12 months of age, and in specific situations, such as people who are immunosuppressed.

A shortage of meningitis C vaccine doses frustrated people who were at health centers in Belo Horizonte on Thursday. This is the case of the retired Fatemeh Parachante, 63, who was present at the Carlos Chagas Health Center, in the Santa Ifigenia neighborhood, in the Central and South district of the capital.

“I knew the vaccination would end on Friday, but today I came for the vaccination and I didn’t have any more doses. My friends went to other health centers and they didn’t get anything either,” she says.

Fatima says that the feeling of insecurity still exists because of the inability to be vaccinated. “I take all the available vaccines, because I trust them completely. I was very frustrated by the fact that I didn’t have more doses,” she said.

Realtor Ana Luisa Saraiva, 31, was in the health center in the neighborhood of Santa Ines, in the eastern region of Belo Horizonte, and also did not find a vaccine. ′′ I am in contact with other people who are also unable to immunize themselves. Now, I’m going to try to figure out the risks of not doing that,” he concludes.
