Athletics, swimming, table tennis and judo made their debut on the event schedule

The first medals of the Federal Institutions Games (JIF) 2023 for athletics, individual table tennis, individual judo, swimming and team chess were announced today, Wednesday (25). The competitions started in the morning and continued until the early evening. The institutions that ended the day with the most victories were the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso, the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte and the Colegio Pedro II, with 14, 10 and 9 medals respectively.

The athletics events opened at the Peche Campus of the Federal University of Ceara, starting at 8 a.m., with finals in 10 categories. At the Olympic Training Center (CFO), judo made its debut after the weigh-in stage, leading to good results for the IFMT and the Federal Institute of Ceara, which received its first gold medal.

In the singles table tennis competition, the men’s duel was fierce, as the five games ended with a result in favor of Andre Kenta, a computer science student at the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso do Sul. He had to sweat and change his strategy during the match, but sorry: “It is a great happiness to be… “Here as champion. It’s a great event and I hope more titles will come now.” The women’s match was comfortable for Annalo Brusti of the Catarinense Federal Institute, who defeated her opponent 3-0.

Swimming debut with record breaking
In the late afternoon, at sunset, the swimming athletes gathered in the Olympic Pool to compete in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 50-meter breaststroke, and 800-meter freestyle events. Vanessa Barbosa, from the Federal Institute of Paraiba, was the standout, winning silver in the 50m breaststroke and gold in the 800m with a record time of 11:43.84.

At just 15 years old, the mining student prepared herself, took control of her anxiety and made JIF history. “It’s an incredible feeling because you can see that what you’ve trained for so long is serving you. It’s pressure, it’s scary, but it’s perfect to be here. This goal has been achieved,” the swimmer celebrated.

Like Vanessa, athlete from the Federal Institute of Espirito Santo, Lucas Aragão, set a record time in the sport, finishing the men’s 800m in a time of 9:13.31, and taking top three places in the women’s 50m freestyle. In the category of persons with disabilities, Felipe Reyes, from the Federal Institute of Amazonas, received the gold medal.

The chess team results were also decided today, with victories for the IFRN women’s team and the IFC men’s group. The method competitions will continue tomorrow in the individual category. The second rounds of basketball, football, futsal, handball, indoor volleyball and beach volleyball competitions were also held. The round-robin tournament ends on Thursday (25th), and the disputes continue in the replay, semi-final and final stages.
