The musical documentary “Elis & Tom, Just Had to Be With You”, directed by Roberto de Oliveira, will premiere in Los Angeles, USA, on September 15th. The production will arrive in Brazil a few days later, on September 21.
The Los Angeles premiere, reported by Variety, holds something special: the album “Elis & Tom” was recorded in this North American city in 1974. Oliveira at the time was Elis’ manager and special program manager. On TV Bandeirantes, he recorded the meeting between singer Elis Regina and musician and composer Tom Jobim on video.
And in an interview with Variety, Oliveira talked about the importance of the singer and composer to Brazilian music and how they overcame personal differences when recording the album – the documentary, which has already been shown at film festivals in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, how it all happened.
“[Foram] Two great artists did not agree on a personal level, but art unites talent. And when these geniuses finally recognized themselves, a masterpiece appeared. “In the end, they both came out of the crisis more and learned from each other,” Oliveira said.
The album “Elis & Tom”, available on streaming platforms, includes songs such as “Águas de Março”, “Pois é”, “Chovendo na Roseira”, “O que had to be” and “Retrato em Branco e Preto”. All books by Tom Jobim, solo or with partners.
In addition to the United States, the “Elis & Tom, It Just Had to Be With You” documentary is being negotiated with distributors in Japan and Australia.
“Elice Regina was a regional hit, but the theme of the film is universal, like the music,” Oliveira told Variety. “This story could have happened anywhere in the world.” (Content Estadao)
