Shinji Mikami, one of the most famous directors of all time – responsible for the Resident Evil saga – has revealed the secret to creating a good remake.
During an interview with IGN, Mikami explained his philosophy when working on this type of project.
“I think a comprehensive and fundamental understanding of what made the original work is probably the most important point in a good reproduction,” he said. “You’re doing everything from scratch, basically… There are some examples of that in a certain series that Capcom released.”
It seems pretty clear that Mikami is referring to Capcom’s Resident Evil remake, which was a huge hit with fans and critics.
In the same interview, the director made some positive comments about the new version of Resident Evil 4, which was released in 2023, saying that it was “very well done” and praising its combat and how it creates tense confrontations. “I think they showed a really good understanding of this element,” he said.
“Another thing that I thought was very well done was the way they took the incomplete script that I wrote in two weeks and really developed it and brought it to fruition.” “They showed that they really understood the characters and their interactions. They showed a good understanding of the backbone of each character. They took not only the setting itself, but even the dialogue, and improved all of that, so it turned out really great.”
In our analysis, we liked Resident Evil 4 Remake, because it’s an “excellent update to a classic game.”
