The city hall in Western Santa Catarina reported an outbreak of chickenpox in public public schools.

The city of Xanxerê, west of Santa Catarina, through the Municipal Health Department, reported on Thursday (19) that it has identified an outbreak of chickenpox, popularly known as “chickenpox” in a public school in the municipality. According to the municipal administration, this is a benign case, already isolated and under control.

According to the Ministry of Health, chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious and infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus that occurs most often in children. The main clinical feature is itchy skin lesions. Important: Once infected with the varicella virus, a person becomes immune to chickenpox.

The Khankesari Municipality Health Department, through epidemiological surveillance, has identified an outbreak of chickenpox in one of the municipality’s public schools. This is a benign case, already isolated and under control.

Chickenpox (varicella) is a contagious, generally benign disease that occurs most often in unvaccinated children, but can also affect teens and adults. It is characterized by skin lesions such as red spots, blisters, and sores on the body, and can also cause malaise, fatigue, low-grade fever, and body aches.

Transmission occurs through contact with the fluid of the blisters and also through coughing, sneezing, saliva or objects contaminated with the virus. Prevention and care measures are vaccination according to the national vaccination calendar; hand washing; isolation of persons with chickenpox until all lesions have crusted over (usually 7 to 10 days); simultaneous disinfection of objects and environments as well as keeping the room ventilated.

People who have signs and symptoms that suggest chickenpox should seek medical attention and guidance regarding treatment and care.
