Suarez shines as Uruguay beat Canada on penalties to finish third in Copa America

In an exciting match, Uruguay defeated Canada on penalties 4-3 and took third place in the Copa America. In regulation time, Bentancur opened the scoring, while Kone left things as they were in the first half. Celeste Olimpica were pressing in the final period, when Jonathan David filled the net with a quick counter-attack. However, Luis Suarez decided to equalize in the dying minutes. In the penalty shootout, Rochet saved Kone’s shot, while Davies hit the crossbar.

Celeste Olimpica now turns its attention to the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The team currently sits in second place with 13 points and will face Paraguay on September 5 in Uruguay. It is worth noting that Canada is one of the host countries for the next World Cup, along with the United States and Mexico.

Celeste is merciless

Uruguay pressed from the first minute and soon managed to open the scoring. A corner kick in the Canadian area is headed by Caceres but the ball goes to Betancur. The player turns inside the area and shoots powerfully, hitting St. Clair’s net. In another good play from Marcelo Bielsa’s men, Maxi Araujo finished the ball, but the archer saved the ball.

Kone scores the goal

Even under adverse conditions, Canada did not back down and also populated the Uruguay area. In a high ball, Pompito beat the defense and supported Koné. The player covered Roche and left everything intact in Charlotte.

In the second half, Celeste Olimpica had a better chance to win. In a good move by Arrascaeta, Luis Suarez had a chance to score, but he stopped at the opponent’s shooter. Canada also took risks, but this time they were less efficient. Valverde took a risk and hit the post after hitting the red and white defender.
