early post
Before he hit it big with Smithmouth, Steve Harwell had a rap group. He was signed to a company in Santa Monica, but it didn’t work out.
In an interview with Stereogum in 2017, the celebrity recounted a little about that period and how he left rap and turned to rock music. “I was at a radio conference in Las Vegas watching MC Hammer, of all people, and I looked at my boss and said, ‘I’m so sick of all this hip-hop crap, I want to start an alternative rock band,'” she recalled.
Then, Smash Mouth was born in 1994. The group had rock influences from the 1950s and 1960s and was understood as alternative rock, alternating ballads, ska punk and surf music.
Their first album was “Fush Yu Mang” in 1997. It did well in sales and airplay on US radio.

Two years later, Harwell and the group released the record that became their biggest hit: “Astro Lounge.” It contains the songs “Then Comes Morning” and “Al-Diyaaa”.
Steve is still remembered today for the song from the movie “Shrek”. The song “All Star”, which also appeared on the band’s second album, became famous as the cartoon’s soundtrack and charted at No. 4 on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100.
Personal Issues
In 2002, the artist lost his six-month-old son. Presley Scott Harwell died of complications from a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
And in 2021, the singer was going to perform a “chaotic” show at the New York Beer Festival. According to the Los Angeles Times, he was drunk during the show, made Nazi gestures, argued with the audience and yelled things like, “I’m going to kill your entire family.”
Soon after, Harwell left Smashmouth. He claimed health issues and was replaced by Zack Judd. Follow Favorite
