Moscow, December 26 (Sputnik) – Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, ousted in July after mass protests, left Sri Lanka’s Bandaranaike International Airport with his family for the US, the Daily Mirror reported on Monday, citing airport sources.
In September, Rajapaksa returned to Sri Lanka after fleeing the country in July, when public discontent over the government’s incompetence in handling the economic crisis sparked thousands of protests that rocked Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital. On 20 July Parliament elected Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new President.
Sri Lanka is facing the worst economic crisis in its history since independence in 1948. The economic situation worsened due to a drop in tourist arrivals during the Covid-19 pandemic, which prevented the country from buying enough fuel, and a shortage of foreign currency. The crisis triggered a sharp rise in energy prices and consequent shortages of food and basic necessities, as well as frequent power cuts.
