Shakira received a statue in her honor in Colombia. The 6.5-metre-tall statue was inaugurated in the city of Barranquilla, where the singer was born.
The monument, made of bronze with some aluminum fragments, shows Shakira performing one of her famous dance moves, where she shakes her hips and places her hands clasped above her head.
“A heart that composes, a hip that does not lie, a talent like no other, a voice that moves crowds and bare feet that walk for the good of youth and humanity,” quotes the inscription on the statue’s base.
The ceremony to present the statue created by Yno Márquez to the public was attended by Shakira's parents, William Mubarak and Nydia Ripoll.
According to Agence France-Presse, the local government has been publishing photos of the statue and the process of its creation since August, but the face has not been revealed yet. The monument is installed on the promenade near the Magdalena River.
She thanked Shakira through messages on social media: “I thank the sculptor Yno Márquez and the students of the art school in the region for this display of the enormous artistic talent of the people of my land.”
The singer, who said she was still moved by the tribute, also shared photos of her parents in front of the statue on social media.
“Prone to fits of apathy. Problem solver. Twitter buff. Wannabe music advocate.”
