Secret Service Takes Responsibility for Trump’s Security Breach

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said the federal agency is “solely responsible” for security at the site of Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday (13/7). During the political event, the former president was scratched in the right ear by a 20-year-old gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks.

“At this particular location, we have divided areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is fully responsible for designing, implementing and executing security at the location,” Kimberly told CNN International.

Furthermore, the US Secret Service promised on Monday (15/7) to cooperate with an independent review of the security mechanism following the attack on former President Donald Trump.

“The Secret Service is working with all federal, state and local agencies involved to understand what happened, how it happened, and how to prevent such an incident from happening again,” the agency’s director said.

Iran’s plan to kill Trump

The Secret Service has beefed up security for Donald Trump after authorities uncovered an Iranian plot to kill the former president, but it was unrelated to the shooting at the rally last Saturday. The National Security Council said it has been tracking “Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials” for years, as Tehran seeks revenge for the 2020 killing of Revolutionary Guard commander Qassem Soleimani.

In this sense, The Secret Service said it is “continuously receiving new information about potential threats” and is taking steps to “adjust resources as necessary.”
