Science-focused programs welcome the public to the USP campus in Piracicaba – USP Journal

On August 4th, from 2pm to 6pm, Esalq will host a Science and Technology Sunday, bringing together a series of activities spanning science and culture; the event is free and open to the public.

The Luiz de Queiroz Higher School of Agriculture (Esalq) at the University of the South Pacific in Piracicaba, on August 4, from 2 pm to 6 pm, is promoting Sunday with Science and Technologyat the Louise de Queiroz Museum, the Education and Arts Center and the Louise de Queiroz Science Club. This event is part of the National Science and Technology Week project agenda and includes giant games, such as chess and tangrams, telescope observation, circus, and other activities. The program is free and open to the public.

The project Sunday with Science and Technology Created in 2023 by Pecege Institute – Continuing Education Program in Economics and Business Administrationin partnership with Research and Extension Group of the Reference Centre for Teaching Natural Sciences (CRESIN) and the Luis de Queiroz Museum.

The program has Science Square, where giant games such as chess, tangram, Kai Nao Kai and others will be presented, in addition to thematic experiments that speak in a practical way about mathematics and physics. In partnership with the Federal Institute of São Paulo (Piracicaba campus), solar exercises will be offered, using telescopes to observe the sun, and lectures on the sundial, astronomy and the changes Seasons and length of day and night.

Art Cirque Produções, a circus school in Araraquara, promotes circus practices, showing that physics and circus go hand in hand. Concepts such as balance, movement and force are part of an experience for the public to test physics concepts in practice. The public will also be able to discover the new exhibition at the Luiz de Queiroz Museum, Maths RevealWhich will contain screens, in addition to the possibility of visiting other rooms with pieces from its collection.

In addition, the Permanent Technical Committee for the Prevention and Control of Brazilian Spotted Fever at the Luiz de Queiroz Campus will be present to talk about the spotted fever campaign that took place during the weekends of July, to warn of the risks of the presence of the star tick in remote areas and also in areas with high prevalence. This team will be available to answer questions about the disease and how the management at the Luiz de Queiroz Campus keeps the recommended recreational areas free of ticks. It is worth noting that the symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever appear in the form of joint pain, fatigue, high temperature, and the appearance of red spots on the body.

The project

In addition to the Pecege Institute, the project has the joint participation of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FCA) of Unicamp, the State School of Technology (Fatec), the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo (IFSP) – Piracicaba Campus, Esalq and the BioSistema Institute (IBS). In addition to the participating institutions, the project receives funding from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation – MCTI, through the federal government.
