A few days ago, OpenAI introduced version 4 of ChatGPT, which brings a series of new features to the assistant, including a new tool that allows you to have voice conversations between humans and AI, but the presentation seems to have generated more controversy than we imagined, and not only because of the development that… It happened on the platform, but because it allegedly illegally recreated the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson, known as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
GPT-4o, which was launched last week, bears many similarities to the 2013 film “Her,” and the platform’s ability to mimic emotions. It’s not just the voice function that’s getting a lot of attention, but also the uncanny similarities that Sky’s voice assistant shares with Scarlett Johansson.
In the film Her, Johansson voiced an AI interface named Samantha which is set in the near future. The events of the film revolve around the emotional capabilities of the voice assistant, reaching the point where the user enters into a romantic relationship with the operating system based on artificial intelligence. With the new GPT-4o updates and its ability to imitate emotions using Sky’s voice that sounds like the famous actress’s voice, we can’t help but feel a sense of inspiration.
Interestingly, it seems that the similarities between the film’s situation and the actress’ voice were not a coincidence, as Johansson posted an open letter via her social media confirming that Sam Altman, founder of ChatGPT, reached out to her so she could give the voice to Sky’s assistant. However, the actress rejected the request for personal reasons.
A few days before the announcement of ChatGPT-4o, Altman contacted the actress’s agent again, but before negotiations could progress, the demonstration was broadcast with a transcript of her voice, leaving the actress shocked by the situation.
The actress reveals that she appointed a legal team to handle the case and that OpenAI reluctantly had to change Sky’s voice.
To make matters worse, Sam Altman made a post on his
The actress ends her message by saying that we live in a time of fighting deep fakes and fighting for ownership of our works and images, in addition to demanding appropriate regulation to prevent the recurrence of such situations.
Do you agree to the actress’s request?
“Prone to fits of apathy. Problem solver. Twitter buff. Wannabe music advocate.”
