Russian warplanes have invaded airspace over US military bases in Syria every day this month, in violation of agreements with the United States. Allied Air Command Lt. Gen. Alexus Krinkevich said the number of Russian fighter jets raiding the base has increased significantly in recent months, according to US Central Command.
The military said NBC News This month, 25 Russian warplanes entered the airspace of the Donf base. Some of these fighters will carry air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons such as Su-34s with missiles or radar-guided or heat-guided bombs.
He believes Russia has no intention of using weapons against the U.S. military, but warned that doing so would increase the risk of errors in judgment and undermine ground operations against Islamic State.
In 2019, the United States and Russia created flight rules to prevent accidental clashes in Syria, banning armed aircraft from flying over each other’s land bases. However, Krinkevich said Russia did not stop the flights because it did not consider the entire area above the base to be US airspace.
He also approached the anti-collision hotline to protest these flights. So far there has been no response from the Russian Embassy in Washington regarding the airspace violations against US military bases in Syria. The US is still trying to prevent breaches, but Russian fighter jets remain a challenge.
