Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned that the presence of US nuclear weapons on European soil is “unacceptable” and that “the time has come for them to be withdrawn.” In a speech to the UN on Tuesday, the Kremlin’s representative accused the United States of creating “insecurity” in the world, both via video conference and in the midst of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The speech ahead of the UN Disarmament Conference was boycotted, and a significant number of governments at the UN walked out of the Lavrov chamber.
The Chancellor will not be able to travel to Geneva due to the sanctions imposed against the diplomat and the closure of the airspace. But in one video, he stressed the need for a regional security agreement with the Americans.
Lavrov’s call came just days after President Vladimir Putin warned he had his nuclear weapons at the ready, although he insisted it was a defensive move to counter what the Kremlin thought were NATO provocations. Moscow’s gesture was condemned by the international community.
According to Lavrov, the Americans and their allies must stop deploying medium- and long-range missiles in Europe.
The Russian minister warned that Ukraine would possess “nuclear technology” derived from the years of the Soviet Union and that this “danger” should be noted. Kiev denies the allegations and insists that the country abandoned its nuclear weapons when the Soviet camp disintegrated.
