U.S. Rep. George Santos, who lied about much of his resume and career, will be removed from Congress if he is found to have violated campaign finance laws, fellow Republican and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Eade said Sunday.
“Neither I nor any other member of Congress has decided whether he can be expelled for lying. Now, if he violates campaign finance laws, he will be expelled from Congress,” Comer said on the “State of the Union” program. From CNN.
Santos, the son of Brazilian parents, has repeatedly refused to step down despite growing pressure within his own party to step down.
Last Thursday, he said he would vacate his seat representing voters in the New York City area only if he loses the next election.
Several members of the Republican Party, many of them from the same Santos district, which includes parts of Queens and Long Island, called for the newly elected congressman’s resignation.
At least six of his fellow Republicans in New York state joined those calls.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he would leave Santos’ fate in the hands of the Ethics Committee and voters.
