Putin threatens to use more cluster bombs in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia has “sufficient stocks” of cluster bombs and that it intends to use them if Ukraine uses the same type of weapons sent by the United States.
“Of course, if they are used against us, we reserve the right to take similar measures,” Putin said in an interview with state television, excerpts of which were published on Sunday.
Cluster bombs have tremendous destructive power, because in addition to exploding, they generate projectiles that are fired at high speed over great distances in all directions, causing fatalities and serious injuries within a large area. It is banned in over 100 countries.
Cluster bombs are already in use by both sides of the conflict. But there are concerns that widespread access to this munition will end up affecting civilians.
