Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is running for a new six-year term in an election his opponents see as a travesty of democracy, said on Tuesday that previous elections in the United States had been rigged by mail-in ballots.
“In America, previous elections were falsified with postal voting… They bought ballots for $10, filled them out without the supervision of observers and threw them into mailboxes, that's all,” Putin said without evidence.
Putin's opponents say the March elections in Russia have generated no real controversy because the president wields undisputed power and his main rival, Alexei Navalny, has been in prison for more than 30 years, claims Navalny fabricated.
According to them, the use of electronic voting creates a space for officials to manipulate votes in favor of Putin without detection.
