(Reuters) – Police in Knoxville, Tennessee, said on Monday that they are responding to reports of school shootings that may have caused a number of casualties.
Several victims of the shooting were reported, including a police officer. “The investigation is still ongoing,” Knoxville Police said on Twitter.
Television footage showed police and firefighters around East Austin High School in East Knoxville.
“Knox County Schools respond to the shooting this afternoon in Austin East Magnet High. We are gathering information about this tragic situation and will provide additional information as quickly as possible,” said Knoxville School Director Bob Thomas, on Twitter.
“The school building was closed and students who were not involved in the accident were released to their families,” Thomas said.
Local 10 News reported that the school has been placed under a “blockchain” and that parents have been directed to go to the back of campus to pick up their children.
