The Stellantis-owned carmaker has confirmed that petrol versions of the Jeep Avenger will be sold in small numbers in the UK.
The move reverses the company’s decision to sell the compact crossover in the UK with an electric powertrain.
Jeep told Autocar that it will mainly use an electric Avenger, but said an internal combustion variant could help meet the needs of its customers. 80% of Jeep sales are powered by combustion.
The petrol Avenger was previously on sale in Italy and Spain. So far, Avenger models arriving in the UK have an electric powertrain, but petrol versions will arrive in the UK later this year.
They will be powered by the Puretec three-cylinder 1.2-litre turbo engine, which is used by several Stellar models such as the Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 308 and Citroen C3 Aircross.
Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but the petrol Avenger will significantly undercut the all-electric version, which retails for £35,700 in the UK.
The electric Avenger has a 54kWh battery with 154bhp and 192lb ft of torque. It has a 0-62 mph time of 9.0 seconds and a range of 254 miles.
Jeep’s decision to sell the petrol Avenger in the UK follows its earlier decision to sell the C4 X in UK-only electric power, following the face of the Stellandis Citroen brand.
The C4 X will now be offered with a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains, joining the Citroen Berlingo, whose ICE variants were dropped in 2020 and reinstated in March this year due to high customer demand.
