The president of the South African Medical Association was the first to identify cases of the variant in the country and alert the government-linked advisory committee to the possible spread of a new variant.
The warning sign of the emergence of a new strain of the virus came when a doctor noticed a significant increase in patients aged 40 or younger in clinics, with symptoms different from the usual ones.
