The North Korean Ministry of Defense said, “We will withdraw from military measures taken to prevent tensions and military incidents in all areas such as land, sea and air, and we will deploy heavily armed forces and advanced military equipment in the border areas.”
The North Korean government announced that it would not detain her under the agreement.
South Korea indicated on Wednesday that the agreement had been partially suspended. Seoul announced that it would resume border monitoring operations in response to North Korea’s launch of a spy satellite.
The United States and its allies condemned the launch of the Malingyeong-1 satellite, calling it a “flagrant violation” of UN sanctions.
North Korea said the satellite was in orbit and that Kim Jong Un had already reviewed images of US military bases in Guam.
According to the South Korean military, the satellite has entered orbit, but it is too early to say whether it is working. The country’s intelligence agency also reported that North Korea received help from Russia to launch the equipment.
South Korea believes Kim Jong Un’s regime is capable of launching more satellites next year. It is also possible that Pyongyang will conduct a nuclear test in 2024.
