Until she self-identified as non-binary (someone who does not identify as a man or a woman), at the age of 16, Neela’s path was surrounded by studies and understandings. Today, at twenty-three years old, the actress is struggling to gain recognition and to make her new name in the history of art. When she was one of the protagonists of the movie Malhação: Vidas Brasileiras, when she played the character of Michael, the artist used her birth certificate, but recently decided to change it.

In January of this year, Nella announced that she was changing her name, even with the fear that she would not be called up for a new job due to the change in identity.
– I was very afraid of being out of work. My fear was that my name would change and people wouldn’t invite me to work. Now that those changes are happening, with assuming and playing the person I am without suffering for it, I feel more comfortable,” the artist revealed to EXTRA.
Nila does not hide her desire to return to soap operas, now with her new name. Despite the difficulties, the actress analyzes with great optimism the opportunities that have arisen for her ilk. In addition to “Terra e Passion” and “Vai na Fé,” which have two trans actors in the cast — Valéria Barcellos, who plays Luana, and Alan Oliveira’s character, Cidão, respectively — the next telenovela, “Elas porelas,” will air at 6 p.m. First trans hero in the telenovela. Interpretation of the main role will have Maria Clara Spinelli, as presented by the columnist Patricia Cogut, from the O Globo newspaper.
– I think things are so different from when I did “Malhação” that now I will be able to take soap operas in a more mature way and deal better with the audience. If there was a great role in the series, I wouldn’t think twice. I love to work and I love the speed that television puts me through. Some people may not like the pace so much, but the pace of the sitcom is really fun,” says Neela.
Difficulties in changing the name
On the verge of the premiere of the second season of “De volta ao 15”, which will hit Netflix in July, Nila is having a transformative moment, and not just in name. Last Tuesday (age 16), Nila made an appeal on social media to change her Instagram username. According to her, the platform does not allow her to change her profile name, which remains with the old address.
The problem is that it is difficult for these platforms to understand that there are certain specific demands of a group. What happened to me with my name revealed is very complicated. The media, in general, is very biased against trans people — you might think.
EXTRA has reached out to Instagram, who have confirmed that they will look into Nila’s case. The social network said in a statement through its press office:
We want everyone to feel truly represented on Instagram and we will consider that case. When an account has a verification badge, it means we have confirmed who it represents at the time the badge was requested. So, once verified, profiles of characters, fans, celebrities and brands cannot change their username them to avoid scams and scams.”
