After launching an ad-supported subscription plan for the US and UK, Netflix will now end the basic plan in both countries, forcing users who want to watch content without “commercials” to subscribe to a more expensive plan.
The company’s decision was posted on the website rope bustersthen confirmed by the specialized website the edge. In both countries, the Standard plan with ads went on sale at the end of June – in the US the service costs $6.99 and in the UK the package costs £4.99
Until then, the plans the streaming service marketed were Standard with Ads, Basic, Standard, and Premium — the same plans currently available in Brazil. The company said that subscribers who already have the basic plan will continue to use the option. However, for new customers, it is no longer possible to choose the option.
So the cheapest option without Commercials in both countries is around $15.49 in the US and £10.99 in the UK, a more than 50% increase over the previous plan that offered no ads.
It is not yet possible to know if the basic subscription exclusion will be affected in other countries as the company is already operating on the standard plan with ads.
