After launching an ad-supported subscription plan for the US and UK, Netflix will now end the Basic plan in both countries, forcing users who want to watch content without “commercials” to subscribe to a more expensive plan.
The Cord Busters website published the company's decision, and it was later confirmed by the specialized website The Verge. In both countries, the Standard plan with ads went on sale at the end of June – in the USA, the service costs US$6.99 and in the UK, the package costs £4.99.
Until then, the plans sold by the streaming service were “Standard with Ads,” “Basic,” “Standard,” and “Premium” — the same plans available in Brazil today. The company stated that subscribers who already have the basic plan will still be able to use this option. However, for new customers, it is no longer possible to choose this option.
As a result, the cheapest option without “commercials” in both countries is around $15.49 in the US and £10.99 in the UK, an increase of more than 50% compared to the previous plan that did not offer ads.
It is not yet possible to know whether the exclusion of the basic subscription will be affected in other countries where the company already operates the Standard plan with ads.
