Mercedes-AMG SL 2022 debuts with fabric roof and 585 horsepower

After nearly 8 years sold in the same generation, the Mercedes SL arrived in the 2022 lineup with a completely revamped. The new breed, identified by the codename R232, is now sold exclusively under the AMG badge and includes a series of developments compared to the model saying goodbye. From platform to design, everything has been reinvented in the new Sport Leicht.

Also responsible for the success of the GT Roadster, the new SL rescued the 2+2 layout for the first time since 1989. Visually, it adopts the latest brand language and includes the same solutions as the latest versions. At the front, the grille composed of vertical chrome slats, a bumper with ample air intakes and angular headlights reminiscent of the CLS are highlighted.

On the sides, the borrowed S-Class electronic folding handles and the three-layer fabric roof, which replaces metal, stand out. It is about 21 kg lighter and can be activated in just 15 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h.

At the rear, quad exhausts enhance the AMG signature and encourage sportiness. The headlights are wide and give the assembly a charming look, while the active rear spoiler offers 6 different configurations.

Known to the public since July, the interior uses leather, offers four seats and adopts the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system. The vertical screen measures 11.9 inches, is touch-sensitive and has an adjustable tilt to suit the driver’s profile (ranging from 12° to 32°). Complete the quadruple package of 12.3-inch all-digital gadgets and augmented reality head-up display.

As it should be for a Mercedes-Benz convertible top-of-the-line, the Airscarf heating system is standard equipment. It has air vents integrated into the front headrests and acts as a kind of invisible scarf when warm winds blow over passengers’ necks and rears.

In the US, the 2022 SL will be sold in SL 55 and SL 63 versions – both equipped with a 4.0 V8 biturbo engine. The first variant delivers 475 hp and 71.3 kgf / m of torque, while the more powerful configuration generates 585 hp and 81.5 kg / m of power. For the first time, the SL is available with all-wheel drive, specifically the 4Matic + configuration with variable torque distribution. 9-speed automatic transmission.

An electronically controlled limited-slip differential is optional on the SL 55 and standard on the SL 63. The system improves the sports car’s dynamic handling in cornering at high speeds, working directly on traction and stability. The roadster is also able to steer the rear wheels, which makes it easier to maneuver and aids maneuverability.
