The French Football Federation (FFF) has asked players to be neutral regarding the elections in the country. One of France’s main stars, Kylian Mbappé, opposed the request and took a stand against the far-right.
“We see that extremism is at the gates of power. We have the possibility to change everything,” the captain said. “We are at a decisive moment in the country’s history. We are citizens above all else and cannot be cut off from the world.”
Mbappé, 25 years old, is of Cameroonian and Algerian origin. The newly signed Real Madrid-ESP asked the French to define themselves against extremism.
“I hope that my voice is heard as widely as possible. We need to identify with the values of tolerance, respect and diversity. Every voice matters,” he added.
France has been witnessing political tension since President Emmanuel Macron dissolved Parliament and advanced the date of legislative elections after the far-right won the European elections.
The French national team will begin its European Championship campaign on Monday (17) by facing Austria at the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany, in the fourth group of the competition. The group’s first match was held on Sunday (16) and ended with Netherlands’ victory over Poland.
